Cycle
Narracube
6 surfaces
2 surface sizes
1 reader’s view
Cycle is one of three proof-of-principle prototypes that shows how the format of the flexicube shapes the narration and reading practices. The key functional principle in the Cycle prototype is the way it is paged in a loop. The surfaces can carry several words/images or a single word/image. The reading view is fixed and similar to the one offered in a conventional codex book. Held in the hand and paged, the six surfaces are presented, either composed of eight sides vertical or horizontal or four sides in a square composition.
Narration process
The Cycle prototype supports any words or symbols that are repeated in a loop or carry cyclic representations. The usage of repeated words is found in many different expressions through time and cultures. It is used in spiritual practices for prayer and meditation. Prayer beads connect the user to the physical sensation when rhythmically repeating the words and the Cycle can be used to transmit and connect to words in a similar way. This application can carry affirmations, reminders, prayers, poems – or illustrations and colour fields with visual rhythm. Any content that can be divided in six sections can be applied as seen below.
Reading process
Central to the reading experience offered in the Cycle is the repetitive element. The rhythm of the paging is set by your hand. Once your hands are familiar with the specific act of paging, it becomes a meditative repetition in interaction with the physical object’s weight and texture as well as the shifting visual sensation. The reading position is similar to that of a conventional book; a one-point perspective with pages facing you as you engage in the act of paging.
